Carry
  On

Thursday morning snuck up on Carrie, and soon they were on their way
home. Landing in Florida, she realized that it was time to face reality. Sandra
Draper-Neilson was on her to do list. She needed to call her and set up a
meeting to talk about joining her event-coordinating company. In addition to
work, which they both had to deal with, Carrie had a mile long list of things
that she needed to accomplish. However, coming up to the house she now called
home she noticed that they were going to be anything
but productive. Seeing all the cars and hearing music blasting from inside, she
expected Steven to get angry. It was pretty obvious that Jay was throwing a
massive party, and it was a Thursday afternoon for god’s sake. Instead of
getting upset, he started laughing, and got out of the car that had brought them
back from the airport. Grabbing their luggage, he turned to Carrie still
smiling.

“You gotta give him some credit. This many people for a Thursday
afternoon? Let’s just pray the house isn’t completely trashed,” he said, moving
towards the front door. Carrie laughed, almost in disbelief. This lifestyle was
so normal to Steven and Jay, and it
was beginning to feel normal to her too. The fact that they had just spent their
morning on a plane had Carrie feeling slightly exhausted. But once they walked
into the house, her energy reserve kicked in and she was back in party mode.
Before they could survey the damage Jay had done while they had been gone, they
both went straight up the stairs to Steven’s room.

“You know, you should just move your clothes into my room,” he suggested,
setting the suitcases aside. Where was
this coming from? Was it because we slept together every night in
Vegas?

“You think so? Why is that?” she asked.

“Well you don’t have to if you don’t want to. I’m just saying, we spend
most nights together anyways, and I have a much bigger bedroom. There’s plenty
of room in the closet,” he said trailing off. He was searching a dresser drawer,
facing the other way.  Thinking
about it, Carrie realized he made a pretty good point. She wanted
to sleep in his room every night. Waking up next to him was the best feeling
she’d had in a long time. It was the first feeling of security she’d had since
she was little, when she had slept with a teddy bear. Mr.
Puff.

“You know, I may just do that,” Carrie answered, sneaking up behind him
and wrapping her arms around his waist. “Whatcha lookin’ for?” she asked.

“Swim trunks,” he responded, frozen still. Turning around, he met her
eyes. Carrie took the opportunity to meet his lips with hers.

“You know…we…really should….go…downstairs…” Steven managed to get out,
getting lost in his girlfriend.

“Okay…but we’ll continue later…” Carrie whispered. Smiling, Steven
grabbed his trunks and changed.

Looking at the Elvis clock on the wall, Jay noticed that Steven and
Carrie would probably be home soon. Shit. Janie. At that moment, she was in
the pool with a few other people who had started a volleyball game. Why
do I always leave things to the last minute? Steven always manages to
strategically plan things out, and here I am scrambling what to do, the minutes
counting down.
As he started to think about what he was going to say to his
brother and a most likely furious Carrie, his phone vibrated on the bar. He
picked up his phone and read the text message.

CHASE: Hey on way over

JAY: ok. U silly?

CHASE: No. waiting for you. Be there in
20.

Putting
the phone in his pocket, he looked around. Who
  should I bring upstairs?
He usually brought one or two women with him to
“have fun” when Chase dropped off. Spotting Annabelle and Lily by the hot tub,
he decided to ask them once Chase arrived. They were both frequent sleepovers,
and had done cocaine with him and Chase multiple times. Remembering that Janie
was here, he realized he wanted another drink. Pouring a whiskey, he scanned the
crowd. Gale and Arnie were with the girls in the pool playing volleyball, along
with Janie. There were various friends of his and the band’s dancing to the
music, as well as in the hot tub, and scattered throughout the yard. He hadn’t
planned on having a party, but he had gotten bored talking to Janie. She was
eleven years younger than him, and he wasn’t sure how to maintain conversation
with her. His go-to option was to have a party. Throughout the day he had been
monitoring how much she’d had to drink, and so far she’d only had two
margaritas. He didn’t want the reunion of the sisters to go any worse than it
  already would.

Downing his glass of whiskey, he spotted his brother’s dark hair emerging
from the house. Stepping into the backyard patio area, Carrie was right behind
Steven. They both appeared to be in a good mood, and Jay waltzed over to talk to
them. It’s better they hear it from me
than just seeing her in the pool. Well Carrie seeing her. Steven doesn’t know
about her. Carrie never told him she had a sister, did she? Oh well, here goes.

“Hey guys,” Jay said, with a wave of his hand.

“Hey Jay. You decided to have a party?” Steven asked, raising his
eyebrows and placing a smirk on his face. Good.
In a good mood.

“Yep. So Carrie, how did you like the gambling capital of the country?”
he asked, a little too much pep in his voice.

“It was amazing. I had a great time, and next time you’ll have to come
with us!” she responded, eyes beaming up at him. Great.
She’s in a good mood too. I’m probably about to ruin it.

“Listen, there’s something I’ve got to tell you,” Jay said, looking
between the two of them. His younger brother immediately tensed, and Carrie
squinted her eyebrows.

“Who died? Is everything okay?” Steven said, somewhat sarcastically.

“Nobody died, Steven. It’s actually news for Carrie. There’s someone here
to see you. You’ve got a guest,” Jay said, looking at Carrie questioningly.

“Who?” she asked him, with a puzzled look on her face.

“Janie,” he replied in a whisper.

“What?” she asked him as if he was crazy, “I need a drink,” she snapped,
bumping into Jay as she approached the bar.

What the hell is my little sister
doing here? Is she okay? How did she get all the way down here? How did she know
where I was? Did she find out from Danny? What the hell am I gonna do with her?

“Where is she,” Carrie spat out after downing a few gulps of rum.

“In the pool, playing volleyball. She got here Monday, and I let her stay
in one of the guest rooms,” Jay said, timidly. Carrie stormed towards the pool,
spotting her sister instantly.

“JANIE MELISSA MOORE!” Carrie screamed. Suddenly, her sister stopped
paying attention to the game, and made eye contact with her Carrie. Instead of
smiling, she had a guilty look on her face.

“Hey Carrie,” she responded with a half smile on her face. Everyone else
in the pool stopped the game, and stared at Carrie.

“Get out of the pool. Now. Get some clothes on, and I will meet you
inside. We’re going to have a talk,” Carrie instructed. When Janie stayed frozen
in the pool, she added, “Move! Now!”

Janie scrambled out of the pool, the other guests looking confused.
Marching towards the house, her younger sister sped past Jay and Steven who both
just looked at Carrie, confused. Walking up towards the two brothers, Steven
held out his drink to Carrie, which she took and downed.

“Your sister is here? Jay why
didn’t you call us?” Steven asked, bewildered.

“I don’t know, I guess I didn’t wanna interrupt your first vacation
together. She was fine,” Jay explained. After a few minutes of answering
questions to Steven and Carrie, they all three went inside. Carrie grabbed
Janie’s arm and dragged her into the parlor where the four of them sat scattered
around the room.

“Why did you come down here?” Carrie demanded.

“Wow Carrie. I thought you’d be happy to see me. You just left me up
there to rot with mom, no note to where you went, no goodbye, nothing. What did
you expect me to do? Finish high school and move on? Completely forgetting about
my sister?” Janie asked, angry.

“YES!” Carrie answered, “You aren’t supposed to be here! You need to
finish high school, go to college, and move on with your life. I’m sorry that
you have to stick it out at home for another year, but you’re going to go to
school for senior year. If you don’t finish high school then you can’t go to
college.” It will break my heart if you
don’t graduate and go to college.
Carrie cared deeply for her sister, and
wanted her to succeed more than anything. Taking off to a different state and
finding a job was okay for herself, but not her sister.

“Seriously Carrie?!” Janie asked, tears starting to form in her eyes. “I
want to be with you! Not back home.
I hate it there, and you know why!” she continued, her voice raising a few
octaves at the end.

“Janie, how did you even get here? What the hell happened?” she asked
Janie, but was looking at Jay. After Janie and Jay explained the past few days,
Carrie nodded and took a deep breath. She didn’t say anything. Instead, she
walked out of the room, motioning that she would be a second.

Walking towards the kitchen, she sunk to the floor against the cabinets.
Lost in thought, she took a few moments to herself. I
love my sister. But why the hell did she have to come to Florida? What about
school? I know it’s only June but come September she’ll have to go back to
school and have her senior year. She needs to graduate. What the hell am I going
to do?

Sitting in the parlor, Steven looked at Janie. She was definitely a
younger Carrie. Her hair was slightly lighter, and she had green eyes, but was
still similar to Carrie. He saw a tear stream down Janie’s cheek.

“Janie? I know it’s probably not the best time, but I’m Steven Canter.
I’m your sister’s boyfriend. And you’ve been staying at my house,” Steven said
looking at Janie with a wave, and trying to lighten the mood with his sarcasm.
Her sad expression faltered slightly, and she smiled. He gave her his signature
smirk in return.

“Why did you come down here?” he asked when she didn’t say anything.

“I already explained that. I wanted to be by my sister. I want to stay
with her,” she explained. Jay’s eyebrows shot up, and he checked his phone.

“Chase is here. I’ll be back,” Jay said, exiting the room.

“Janie, I understand you want to be by your sister. But don’t you have
school?” he asked her.

“Yeah but that’s not until September, and it’s my last year of high
school. I don’t want to go back though,” she said, wiping her tear away. Steven
wasn’t good at dealing with emotion like this, and he shifted uncomfortably.

“Alright. Will you stay here please? I’m going to go find your sister and
talk to her in private for a bit,” he responded, moving towards the open door.

“Sure. I’ll wait,” she responded, crossing her legs. Steven went towards
the kitchen and living room, looking for Carrie. Not seeing her at first, he
called out, “Carrie?”

“Over here,” she responded, sighing.

“What are you doing on the floor?” he asked, moving towards her. She was
sitting on the tile against the pots and pans cabinet.

“Thinking,” she said, as he sat down next to her. “I’m secretly glad to
see my little sister, but I’m also upset that she came here. She’s suppose to be
back home and go back to school in September to live out her senior year. She has to finish high school and go to
  college,” Carrie explained to him.

“I understand that. I really do. But you know that she probably just
misses you? Besides your mother, she’s all you got right?” Steven asked.

“Yep. Just me. But Steven what about school? I want her to go places, I
want her to go to college and be successful. She’s not like I am, trust me.
She’s not good at dealing with change. I’m honestly surprised that she came all
the way down here,” Carrie said, looking Steven in the eye.

“Alright, well why don’t you let her stay here for the summer? At the end
of August she can go back home to Rillmont and go to school. She might even
decide to go back home after a week of being in Stonessa. If she really doesn’t
like change or the life down here, she’ll want to go back home. Problem solved.
If her education and future is that important to you, then I promise
that she will graduate and be able to go to college,” he said, looking down at
his girlfriend’s eyes. He saw water collect in her ocean eyes, and smiled at
her.

“Really? I guess I wouldn’t mind her being here so much as long as I know
she’ll go back for school in the fall. God knows I hated living at home. But I
don’t want to put you out. It already means so much to me that I have a place to
live here, are you sure her staying here would be okay?” she said, her voice
squeaking a bit.

“Of course. I’m your boyfriend. I want to make sure you’re happy,” he
responded, putting his arm around her shoulder.

“I guess we can put up with her for the summer. She might not even want
to stay, like you said,” she said, leaning her head into his neck.

“Right. Let’s go talk to her, she seemed upset,” Steven said, standing up
and holding out a hand for Carrie.

Jay was up in his room with Chase, Annabelle, and Lily. The girls were
both on his bed, staring back at him and Chase. Doing his last line for the
night, Jay looked out his window. He was able to see everyone downstairs,
partying and having fun. Annabelle put her arms around him from behind, and he
sighed.

“Annabelle, not right now. Wait a while, I wanna go back downstairs,” he
said, and turned to exit his room. Walking downstairs he spotted Janie, Carrie,
and Steven in the parlor with the door halfway open. They were all three
talking, and he decided to not interrupt. He continued outside, and poured
himself another drink. Seeing Arnie and Gale by the hot tub, he went over to
talk to them.

“Hey,” he said, coming up next to Gale.

“Hey, where have you been?” Gale asked.

“Inside. Upstairs. Dealing with shit,” Jay responded. He wanted to get
drunk tonight. There was too much drama for him to handle, and he wanted to
forget. Knowing either Annabelle or Lily would be waiting for him in his room,
he chose to have a few more drinks. Not listening to what Gale had started to
ramble on about, he saw a figure out of the corner of his eye. Turning towards
his right to get a better view of who was sipping a glass of wine, he spotted
her. Squinting to see better, he saw a woman with long, straight, dark-brown
hair. Straight bangs and bright red lipstick gave her away. Charlette.
With the brief second they made eye contact, she waved with a smile and winked
at the elder Canter brother. After that, she was gone. Shaking his head, Jay
wondered if it was just the drugs playing with is mind. Soon he returned to his
drink and conversation with Gale, completely forgetting about the wink and
  wave.
